  • Boxes to collect donation items listed on this calendar are located outside the Center for Service and Social Justice office (DeNaples 205B) and near the elevators on first floor DeNaples.  You may also call the CSSJ office (x7429) for pick-up of items.  We will happily take gently-used, clean clothing.  Men’s coats, hoodies, sweatpants, new underwear (in sizes large and up) and small duffel/gym bags, backpacks or re-usable cloth bags are most needed.​​

American Red Cross- (IN PERSON) looking for volunteers to screen blood donors for temperatures, asking COVID related questions, making sure donors are registered, distributing beverages and snacks.  Training provided and background checks are necessary and will be run by the agency.  Multiple locations in Lackawanna County.  Contact Grace Palmer at grace.palmer@redcross.org or call 570-202-5801

Boys and Girls Club of NEPA- (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITY) Work with kids! Volunteers can make videos in their field of expertise (It is important to hear about different careers) for us to share on our Social Media, read a short story, tell a joke, do an art project, perform an exercise or make a healthy snack. Catherine McAuley Center- (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITY) The Catherine McAuley Center is looking for college/university level students to serve as virtual mentors/academic tutors for the children and youth enrolled in our programs. We serve a population of homeless families who may often struggle with the transition to virtual classrooms and online learning. College students acting as mentors/tutors will work with the child assigned to them, offering help and support with online assignments and class content. Please note that there will be no in-person contact involved, and all communication will take place by phone or online. Another option for interested students would be to conduct a donation drive on behalf of the Catherine McAuley Center. We are always looking for non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, diapers, and school supplies.  Any student interested in tutoring can email Jenny Blanchard, Development and Volunteer Coordinator at jblanchard@catherinemcauleycenter.org . All student mentors/tutors must submit Child Abuse Clearance and PA Background Check forms to be eligible for the virtual tutoring program.

 

Compassionate Care Hospice: (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITY) Traditionally, hospice volunteers provide companionship and emotional support in a patient’s home or nursing home during their journey through their end of life transition. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Compassionate Care Hospice has reimagined the role of a hospice volunteer. Through our biography program, patients and families are able to connect remotely with a volunteer and share their life story. This walk down memory lane has proven to therapeutic and results in a beautiful keepsake. Biographies are displayed within a patient’s room at a nursing home and another copy is kept by their loved ones to cherish. Students will coordinate with patients and caregivers for an interview. Students will engage in active listening and note taking and work together to compose a biography. Follow up companionship calls will take place throughout the semester to provide additional emotional support and companionship. Griffin Pond Animal Shelter- (IN PERSON) YES! We are still accepting volunteers to our shelter by appointment only. Please email Volunteer@griffinpondas.com for more information. We are looking for those that would be interested in regular dog walking, cleaning within the shelter and outside of the shelter, and more! Junior Achievement- (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITY) the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Our programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities. School as we know it may have changed, but the need hasn't! Though volunteering for Junior Achievement in the traditional sense may not be an option at this time, you can still inspire and prepare our young people as a JA Virtual Volunteer! Meals on Wheels- (IN PERSON) delivery drivers and case/cooler cleaners. Delivery drivers pick up meals in coolers/cases from dropoff locations throughout Lackawanna County and delivers to clients on routes. Routes are delivered M-F between 10am and 1pm. They can usually be completed in under an hour and half. Cooler cleaners report directly to Meals on Wheels office and work in their garage to chemically sanitize materials from 12-3pm. Masks and social distancing are required. Delivery drivers need a valid Drivers License and use their own vehicles. State background checks necessary. St. Joseph's Center- (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITY) Our Day Program clients, prior to COVID-19, were participating in many interesting community experiences, and engaging in special interest groups, such as fishing groups, exploring other cultures (making cultural meals, listing to music associated with the target culture, etc.). With the current restrictions, we have a need to have folks record some interesting experiences to be shared with our clients. Some of these videos could be used as tutorials for client participation (cooking, crafts, exercise etc.) while others may be an experience that our folk may not be able to easily take part in (a mountain climb/hike, skydiving!) but will enjoy the experience. The possibilities are endless. Steamtown National Historic Site- (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITY) Volunteers needed to use a personal computer with Internet access and MS Word, transcribe digitized historical records from the Steamtown NHS Archives. The digitized docs will be emailed to the transcriber, who will email back the transcriptions. Most records currently being transcribed deal with routine operations of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad early in the last century. Work at your own pace. United Neighborhood Centers - (VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES) Become a tutor or teacher to adult learners via telephone or zoom on reading, writing, citizenship education, and English as a second language. Qualifications necessary are fluency in English, good communication skills, an enthusiasm for teaching and learning, and basic understanding of Zoom or a willingness to learn. United Neighborhood Centers- (IN PERSON OR VIRTUAL) Do you play the guitar, keyboard, violin, or drums? Would you be interested in donating an hour or two of your time each week to help teach youth ages 13 to 18 the basics of one of these instruments? UNC is looking for volunteers for a new youth music program. The hours are flexible and instruction can be done in-person or virtually.
